The Khmer/Angkor society was hierarchical like other cultures. This means that everyone has their own position in the society and was either looked up to or looked down upon depending on their status. Khmer society was firmly built around the kings and temples. They refer their ruler as a god-king similar to those in other civilisations like ancient Egypt. The village temple influenced the political and economical decisions made. Local aristocracy was in charge of all the land and resources they managed through the temple. Decisions made by the aristocracy reflected the temple's status and actions.
